Applying early is particularly important for high risk offenders who will be required to take a DVLA medical. In some cases the DVLA will need to make medical enquiries before they issue you with a new driving licence.
If you are classed as a high risk offender then you will need to take and pass a DVLA medical before you will be legally entitled to drive and issued with a driving licence.
In some cases where a motorist has been disqualified from driving until they re-take their driving test or an extended driving test , they will have to apply for a provisional licence by completing a D1 application pack and then make the necessary arrangements to retake a theory and practical driving test.
The Magistrates will have told you if you need to retake your test at the time you received your sentence. When a driving licence is applied for after a disqualification for drink driving related offences the DVLA will usually only reinstate a driving licence with non vocational category entitlement s only.

I phoned the DVLA to ask if I needed a medical as yougov said over 86 you will require one but they said no it is only in certain cases. And yes I recieved my licence back with no medical within 5 working days was v impressed by the DVLA's speed of processing.

More than 10 years - they may make an application for early removal of the disqualification after a period of 5 years. In order to make an application for early removal of a driving disqualification a disqualified driver must make an application in writing to the court that disqualified them.
Send the application to ' Clerk to the Justices ' at the court where the disqualification was imposed. Include as much information as possible including name, date of birth, address at the time of disqualification and current address if different.
You should also include your case number and driving licence number if known. The court hearing will be an opportunity to put forward your case as to why you need early removal of your driving disqualification.
